Poets of Life

Direction: Shirin Barghnavard, Iran 2017, 73 Min., FSK not specified
Julia Haarmann makes the film plea for the documentary about the life of activist and rice farmer Shirin Parsi

Shirin Parsi is a rice farmer, but not an ordinary one. After completing her bachelor's degree in French literature at the University of Paris, she returned to Iran and decided not to live in the metropolis of Tehran. Her husband had inherited land in Shanderman, a village near the Caspian Sea, so they moved there and started growing rice.

The Parsi family - including their two sons who stayed with their parents to farm - have introduced innovations in rice farming. They promote sustainable agriculture and avoid the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers. In a region where more and more farmers are selling their farms to contractors at very favourable prices, the Parsis produce 100% organic rice.

Shirin and her family have opted for an exemplary lifestyle that is rich in indigenous values. In addition to growing rice, she spends her time as a social activist and volunteers with several local NGOs.

The film follows Shirin from preparing the rice fields to the rice harvest and shows her social activities in an attempt to bring about social and environmental change.
